Your task: Use the above image and super rough sketch as a base for your illustration. The sketch is merely a breakdown to help you with proportion and layout, if you need it; you’re not obligated to use it. The idea is to get many different images with the same layout to show the diversity of Tumblr’s Sherlock fanartists. The inspiration for this project was this post: marching123.tumblr.com/post/42421111239

-If possible, images should be the exact dimensions as the original: 750x596. General proportions of characters to each other should remain the same; this doesn’t mean you need to draw realistically or have them be exactly this size, just try to keep them the same size as the original compositionally. Feel free to draw larger and then size it down. if you are scanning or photographing, just do your best to get the composition the same when you crop it. Main two characters should remain John and Sherlock, but if you want to include other characters around them, feel free.

-Be as diverse with style, color, and medium as you want. Change the clothes, the meaning of the scene, the expressions, anything. You’re encouraged to push it as far from the original as you want to. None of the above rules are meant to restrict you to the point you feel you can’t be yourself; if you’re having trouble with it send me a message and maybe I can explain it in a different way.

-Images can include digital art, traditional art, crafts/collage/food/whatever, cosplay photo, any graphic that keeps the spirit of the original.

-Writers may submit a 221B (221 words, the last ending in “B”) inspired by the image or by someone else’s image if they wish (please message the artist if it’s okay to do so before posting it though!).

-Submit by April 20th; participants posting after then can still go on the blog but won’t go in the big collage image I’ll put together at the end of it.

How to submit: post the image/fic on your blog. Tag it within the first three tags “letsdrawsherlock”. You can also send the blog an ask, from the blog where you have posted your entry, with the post ID, so I can look it up.

I’m not going to do anything with your image/fic except reblog it here, and edit it into a large image at the end containing all the artworks submitted.

The story behind this I must know…

It started off as a simple walk through the gardens. It didn’t stay simple for long.

Mycroft hadn’t even wanted to go on a walk that afternoon, perfectly content to stay in his room and finish re-reading The Prince for the third time to see if he could glean anything new from it, but Mummy had insisted that they both needed to get outside on such a nice day and when Mummy made her mind up there was no point in even trying to argue. Having to take Sherlock along was the insult added to the injury of being dragged away from his book, since the boy was going to be just as grumpy as Mycroft and an absolute terror to deal with for however long they were exiled.

The plan was simple - go on a walk around the garden’s perimeter, let Sherlock explore the fish pond for a few minutes, and then make their way back in hopes that their time outside had been sufficient. Sherlock had been tracking the numbers of different species of fish in the pond anyway, and this way Mycroft could claim he’d done his big brother duties for the week and get back to his room as quickly as possible. Really, there was no way this could go wrong.

It went wrong. Quickly.

Just getting Sherlock out of the house was enough of a chore to make Mycroft resent the whole afternoon from the get-go, as there was nothing he liked less than physically dragging a petulant seven year old who had mastered the technique of going limp from a young age out the door. Then of course there was the fact that once he got Sherlock walking under his own power Mycroft had to watch him like a hawk to make sure he didn’t lose the boy like he nearly had two years ago when he made a break for the fields beyond their home through a gap in the hedges that surrounded the garden. By the time they made it to the pond Mycroft had quite thoroughly had enough of Sherlock and outside and the world in general and was more than happy to let the little devil examine the fish on his own.

Until, of course, the sound of a muffled cry and a loud splash coming from the pond’s edge snapped Mycroft out of his thoughts and back to reality again. Just as he feared, Sherlock had been so intent on leaning over to get his face as close to the water as possible that he had forgotten about pesky things like gravity and fallen face first into the pond. The water was not deep, but it was deep enough for a seven year old of Sherlock’s small stature to get into some measure of trouble and the boy had never been a strong swimmer to begin with - and to make matters worse it looked as though Sherlock had conked his head on the way down and managed to daze himself in the process. Without thinking twice Mycroft lunged towards the pool and threw himself in to grab for his little brother, disregarding the shock of the cold water and the thrashing of Sherlock’s limbs that caught him soundly upside the chin as he pulled the boy back towards dry land. After a struggle that was miles away from dignified and more than a few kicks and punches they managed to make it back onto the grass whole and mostly in one piece, although the likelihood of that staying true when Mummy found out what had happened was not good.

But before Mycroft could even open his mouth to reprimand the boy who seemed incapable of staying out of trouble for more than five minutes Sherlock was already glaring angrily at his older brother with arms crossed and mouth set in a petulant frown, seemingly unaware of his soaking wet clothes or the blood trickling slowly down his cheek. “Mycroft, you scared the fish away! I’ll never count them all now, you always ruin everything!”

Another day, another rescue, and still no thanks to show for it. Maybe one day when they were actually grownups that might change, but Mycroft wasn’t going to hold his breath.
